What makes an iron forgiving
Four design choices decide whether a strike an inch from the middle of the face still flies like a good one. Each is explained below in plain words, with the numbers from this site's own iron table so you can see how much the makers actually vary.
What a miss costs, and why
Hit an iron in the middle of the face and the head delivers all of its speed to the ball in the direction it was aimed. Hit it toward the toe and two things happen at once: the head twists open around its balance point, so the face is no longer aimed where you aimed, and the twisting soaks up energy, so the ball leaves slower. Hit it thin (low on the face) and the ball launches low with too little spin; hit it fat (ground first) and the club loses speed before it ever reaches the ball. A forgiving iron is one whose design shrinks each of those penalties. Nothing removes them.
That is why "forgiving" is not one number. It is at least four separate design choices, and makers publish some of them, describe others and keep the rest to themselves. The table on the most forgiving irons page shows what each maker publishes; the cells that say not published are the ones they do not.
Moment of inertia: weight at the edges
Moment of inertia, MOI, is the head's resistance to twisting, measured in gram-centimetres squared (g·cm²). The further the head's weight sits from its balance point, the harder it is to twist, so makers hollow out the back of the head (the cavity back) or the whole inside of it (the hollow body) and push the saved mass to the perimeter, the heel and the toe. Tungsten, which is much denser than steel, lets them put a lot of weight in a small space at the extremes.
Makers publish MOI for drivers and putters far more often than for irons. In this dataset, 0 of 32 iron sets have a published MOI figure. For the rest, the visible proxies are head size, sole width and the maker's own description of where the weight went, which the cues column carries.
Centre of gravity: low and back
The centre of gravity, CG, is the head's balance point. Put it low and the club launches the ball higher from the same loft and the same swing, because the ball is struck above the balance point and gets more backspin and lift. Put it back, away from the face, and the head resists twisting on a thin strike and helps the face square through impact. Every forgiving iron chases a low, deep CG; the wide sole and the hollow body are the two ways to get there, and makers name the technique (sole weighting, tungsten, hollow construction) in their cues.
Sole width: skid, do not dig
The sole is the bottom of the club. A wide sole does two jobs. It carries weight low and back, which is the CG story above, and it changes how the club meets the ground: a narrow sole digs when you strike the turf first, a wide one skids across it and still reaches the ball. Golfers who hit the ball fat, which is most high handicappers, lose far less to a wide sole than to a narrow one.
20 of 32 sets in the table carry the maker's own description of the sole (the makers say wide, moderate, tour-inspired and so on rather than publishing millimetres). Super game improvement sets are the widest, players distance the narrowest, and the difference is visible at address, which is why some golfers cannot stand the wide ones and some cannot play the narrow ones.
Offset: time to square the face
Offset is how far the leading edge of the face sits behind the front of the hosel, the part of the head the shaft enters. More offset means the face arrives at the ball a fraction later in the swing, which gives a golfer whose face is still open (the slicer) a little more time to square it, and it moves the head's weight further behind the shaft, which raises launch. It is measured in millimetres or fractions of an inch, and it usually decreases through the set, most in the long irons where it is needed and least in the wedges.
23 of 32 sets carry the maker's own offset description; a few publish the figure. If your miss is right (for a right-hander), offset is the cue to sort by; if you already hook the ball, high offset will make it worse, and players distance sets with low offset are the ones to look at.
Loft: the number that hides the distance
Loft is the face angle, in degrees from vertical. Lower loft flies lower and further. Makers strengthen the lofts on forgiving irons for two honest reasons and one less honest one: a low CG launches the ball higher than a traditional head would at the same loft, so they can take loft off and keep the flight; strong lofts add distance, which sells; and a 7-iron that goes as far as another maker's 6-iron wins the demo day. Compare lofts before you compare distances, or you are comparing club numbers, not clubs.
Across the 25 sets in this table with a published 7-iron loft, the 7-iron runs from 28° to 35°: a spread of 7.0 degrees, which is about a club and a half of distance between the strongest and the weakest 7-iron.

Every figure for these sets is read from the maker's own product page, with a shop's new price standing in where the maker publishes none and the club page saying which (prices read 2026-09-06); a cell that says not published means nobody publishes it and we do not guess. Face technology: speed on a miss
The last lever is the face itself. A thin, springy face flexes at impact and gives the ball back more speed, and a face designed to flex evenly across its area gives back nearly as much speed on a toe strike as in the middle. Every maker has a name for its version (the cues column lists them as the maker writes them), and every one of them is a variation on the same two ideas: make the face thinner and make the thin part wider. The hollow body construction of the players distance category exists mostly to let the face flex more.
How the three categories differ, in numbers
The categories are the makers' own, and the table below shows what they mean in this dataset's lofts. Fewer degrees means a stronger 7-iron.

Two things usually show in that table. The super game improvement sets are not always the strongest-lofted, because their makers add loft back for launch on slow swings (the HL sets in particular). And the players distance sets are often as strong as the game improvement ones, because the hollow body launches high enough to allow it; they give up sole width and offset, not loft.
Which cue matters for your miss
- You slice: offset first, then a wide sole. Sort the iron table by the cues column and read the offset descriptions.
- You hit it fat: sole width first. Super game improvement, then game improvement.
- You hit it thin and low: a low CG and a bit more loft. Look at the HL and high-launch sets, and do not buy the strongest 7-iron in the table.
- Heel and toe strikes: MOI, which for irons you mostly cannot read, so use head size and the maker's tungsten and perimeter cues as the proxy.
- You hook it: less offset. Players distance, or the plain model rather than the X or HL version in a family.
